Foreword

前言

Dear Readers and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the CAET journal! This second issue follows the birth of the Spring edition, published in February 2016, and is in keeping with its vision and mission to be a unique journal in the field of arts education and therapy. We are witnessing an increased interest in this field, especially in Asia, following the success of the 11th International Expressive Arts Therapy Association Conference and the 2016 International Conference on Art Therapy held in Hong Kong in October 2015 and May 2016 respectively, and the 1st International Symposium of Creative Arts Education and Therapy held in Beijing, May 2016. The respect for Tao and the longing for art and elegance in life, embedded in the tradition and history of China and neighboring cultures, seem to have been awakened and restored, in contrast to the fast economic development in these nations. This confirms our belief that art plays an essential part, as well as science, in creating a balance between Yin and Yang in our societies and in our lives.

This issue features two new sections of the journal, as well as our peer-reviewed articles and reviews. The “Colloquium,” an initiative of our newly-appointed co-Editor-in-Chief, Professor Stephen K. Levine, is a platform to further stimulate dialogue between the East and West. Eight researchers and scholars from China were invited to share their views on the current status and the possibilities for future development of the arts in education and therapy in China. This special section will appear regularly in the journal and will feature different countries or regions in future issues. All the interviewees are excited about this idea, and so are our communities.

The section on “Featured Artists” is a place to showcase artists from Asia. In this issue, CHEN Yan, from the China Academy of Fine Arts, shares her stunning paintings which show her allegiance to Chinese tradition, while also exhibiting a Western touch. The creation of this other new section reflects the mission of CAET to present the living arts in a manner full of blood and spirit, able to reach the soul of human beings and to be both educational and therapeutic. Our Editors-in-Chief, Professors Shaun McNiff and Stephen K. Levine, are both advocates for keeping an aesthetic component in the journal, a position I completely support.

I am also excited to welcome new members into our editorial team, beginning with Professor Stephen K. Levine, of the European Graduate School, currently sitting on the editorial board, who will join Professor Shaun McNiff as co-Editor-in-Chief. An Executive Editorial Committee (EEC) has also been formed, consisting of the two co-Editors-in-Chief, myself as Executive Editor, Dr. Debra Kalmanowitz (Israel) and Shara Claire (Canada). The EEC will advise the Executive Editor and the Editors-in-Chief, and will help create and execute the strategic plan of the CAET journal. In addition, we are pleased to have Aida Curtis (USA) and Nuo Yang (China) join the editorial office of CAET. With a dedicated team, we are prepared to develop the CAET journal in a positive direction by improving our editorial work and by serving our authors and readers to the best of our abilities in the future.

I hope you will enjoy reading issue Number Two of the CAET journal. We look forward to hearing your opinions and to receiving feedback that will help us to better fulfill our mission in the future.
